State Highway 151 Culvert Replacement
The SH 151 project, initiated as an urgent response to the flooding in the spring of 2023, was focused on the removal of 180 linear feet of 150-inch corrugated metal pipe (CMP) under SH 151, which had been compromised by the flooding. The goal of this project was to improve the functionality of the existing roadway and to enhance the drainage system for better management of increased water flow.
The project involved replacing the old CMP with a double-cell concrete box culvert measuring 12 feet by 10 feet by 88 feet, installed at a depth of 19 feet directly underneath SH 151. The continuous flow of Stollstiemer Creek through the project area added an additional challenge to the project. To address this, AWC installed 300 linear feet of 36-inch clean water bypass pipe, which effectively rerouted the creek around the work area. Another unique challenge of the project was the transportation of 30 CBC pieces over Wolf Creek Pass each weighing 45,000 lbs., involving pilot cars and a crane for unloading and setting the culvert pieces.
The project also encompassed several infrastructural enhancements, including asphalt paving, installation of new guardrails, the placement of riprap for erosion control, and the construction of concrete outlet works.
